As Alli, the first FDA-approved diet drug cleared for over-the-counter sale, arrives in drugstores nationwide today, doctors and nutritionists are trying to counter that intense consumer interest and a marketing juggernaut with some spin of their own, arguing that the drug's high cost and limited effectiveness may not be worth its notably unpleasant side effects. Alli (pronounced "ally"), sold by GlaxoSmithKline, is a half-dose of the prescription drug orlistat How it works Alli blocks enzymes that digest fat, preventing the body from absorbing about a quarter of the fat eaten. The undigested fat is then excreted. One study of Alli showed that dieters who took the drug along with diet and exercise over a year lost about three pounds more than people who only dieted and exercised. The company's message is that the pills, typically taken three times a day, are not a "magic bullet," and officials urge users to use Alli only along with exercise and a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet.

Pop star Kelly Clarkson refused a $10 million offer from her record label boss Clive Davis to remove five songs from her forthcoming album. Clarkson recently admitted executives at RCA and Sony BMG had put pressure on her to record songs previously offered to other artists, but she was determined to contribute more songwriting to My December than her previous discs. The Because Of You singer tells the American edition of Elle magazine that Davis offered her money to remove five tracks from the album in favour of other songs, which he believed had more selling ability. Carol Broussard, mayor of the Delcambre, on Louisiana's central Gulf Coast, told The Associated Press that people who indulge in such an "indecent" fashion statement "are better off taking off the pants and just wearing a dress." The new law states, "It shall be unlawful for any person in any public place or in view of the public to be found in a state of nudity, or partial nudity, or in dress not becoming to his or her sex, or in any indecent exposure of his or her person or undergarments, or be guilty of any indecent or lewd behavior." The law applies to women as well as men, the mayor said Wednesday. "If you expose some of your privates, the crack of your behind, if somebody feels insulted they should press charges. If you're offended by it, we want to straighten that out."

AFTER JULY 1ST BRING $5 XTRA TO PARK DOWNTOWN IN SAN JOSE
Alarmed by reports of drinking, vandalism and trash in downtown public garages where nighttime parking is now free, the San Jose City Council voted unanimously to charge $5 after 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday starting next month to deter loitering and pay for cleaning. "I have a huge sense of urgency," Mayor Chuck Reed said. "I want to get some officers in there and get the garages cleaned up." The $5 fee, paid upon entry after 10 p.m. at six downtown garages, would raise more than $400,000 over a six-month trial period to pay for six officers to patrol the garages and for additional cleaning. If the council decides to continue the $5 fee into next year, when the $2 charge after 6 p.m. kicks in, the fee would simply go up from $2 to $5 after 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Frankie Abernathy -- the punked-out, boat-phobic rock chick of MTV's "Real World: San Diego" fame -- died at the age of 25 on Saturday at her mother's home in Shorewood, Wisc. Abernathy suffered from cystic fibrosis, though an official cause of death has yet to be determined, according to MTV News
